The Maine are currently living the dream: After two EPs and a full-length for indie label Fearless, the band were upstreamed to Warner Bros., who will release the Phoenix quintet's follow-up to Can't Stop, Won't Stop next year. In between nearly 18 months of touring (including a co-headlining gig on the 2009 AP Tour with 3OH!3 and Family Force 5), the Maine have been piecing together new songs and feeling out their creative direction. "We're trying to create more of a universal sound for our band," says vocalist John O'Callaghan, when AP caught up with him shortly before the badn embarked on this past fall's tour with Boys Like Girls. "It's not discouraging, but it's one of those things that makes you want to work hard when people start comparing you to other bands -- especially in our 'scene.' I don't think the songs will be as scattered as they were on the first record. We're going to try to go for similar guitar tones, like a Jimmy Eat World record: You can listen to one track and know it's Jimmy Eat World because of the way that guitar sounds." The band are still discussing potential producers and recording schedules, but they do know what they don't want. "When we're writing, we're not going into it thinking, 'Oh, we have to write an uptempo song that sounds like All Time Low,'" says O'Callaghan, laughing. "That's the last thing we want to do -- pigeonhole ourselves into a place that we can't crawl back out of. We're just trying to write good songs."
