a common word to describe sebastian would be almost painfully shy, though he insists it's not the case. shy sounds so negative, he likes to prefer to think of it as thinking before speaking. and whether or not he speaks too often is an entirely different matter, which does fall into being socially shy, though he tends to overlook that for the sake of overlooking. he's not completely inept, though, so when he really wants to, sebastian is fully capable of carrying a conversation should the feeling occur on once every sporadic occasion. always minding the line of being respectful, however, something drilled into him since he was very young, the duties of chivalry and all that: holding a door open for a lady, asking if the elderly need help unloading groceries, things like that. what seemed as a task as a child now, more or less, is just second nature to him, however alien the idea is to the majority of his peers, since being old fashioned was never really all that cool.
not that looking superior to his classmates has ever really been high on sebastian's to-do list, to begin with, honestly. he hides the fact he could afford his own apartment or perhaps just live in his family's newly purchased residence in castor, and instead just lives in the dorms like a lot of fellow students. so far, so good, and no one seems to really (or so he likes to believe) delve into him so much that they notice maybe he's well above middle class, and sebastian is under the impression (and hope) that that particular piece of information about him will remain hidden for his next four years of schooling. it's not that he suspects harshly of his classmates, like they'll take advantage of him for money or something, it's just something he's rather uneasy about; it's not like he earned the money, his father did, and sometimes by morally questionable means. besides, really, who needs hundred dollar jeans or dozens of suits he'll never have enough formal occasions to wear? it's unethical.
while he's the calmer, quieter one out of his siblings (and his family in general, actually), sebastian does believe in familial bonds, but he's more or less been the harder one to understand and fit in with the o'connelly's ideals than his brother and sister; still, he's grateful at the very least, since throughout the years they've tolerated his obvious forte in music, allowing him to purchase and play any instrument he wanted growing up. it's one of the few things that can bring him near completely out of his shell, the desire to share melodies and music to the world.

- - - - overall history,
born as the third and last child of samuel and elaine o'connelly, it didn't take much to learn that, since birth, being born as an o'connelly equaled status, fame, and entitlement to immense wealth. and it wasn't like either parent had decided, since they already had a son and a daughter, they would shun their second son: no, they had both welcomed sebastian into their world, and everything that came with it, under the impression that like richard and isabelle, he would take to it immediately. but even as a child, sebastian didn't seem to 'take to it immediately', it seemed, opting to play in the sandbox instead of overpriced toys, or strum absently on his grandfather's guitar instead of mingle with the other children of the higher class. was it a disappointment? probably. but samuel had already had a son to groom as head of the family business, so it was no real loss, as harsh as it had sounded.
although an amiable child, sebastian did not receive as much attention as he might have had he not been inclined to reject his family name, which may or may not have taken part of his personality, making him quieter and more prone to peace than disagreement. for the sake of settlement, sebastian didn't like to pick fights, and hardly did for that matter, though like all families there were exceptions and arguments did occur, mostly between himself and richard. they often moved into new, grand houses from throughout the provinces of canada, making all three o'connelly children forced to become used to leaving and entering new schools as the years aged on. they all seemed to handle it in each different ways, though for sebastian, usually good natured, it had seemed to silence him moreso.
it hadn't taken too many years of his youth to realize that his father was not honest, and the money he made was not all done from just means. now, he never ventured into the sales of drugs or any other type of narcotic, so maybe it wasn't anything too big of a deal, but it did, subjectively, said something about samuel o'connelly's morale. he was raising the prices maddenly high of the houses he sold, suddenly making everything in benefit for those of their 'social class', ie the people he rubbed elbows with at parties, and leaving needy families to seek shelter elsewhere for their growing children, suddenly unable to afford a home they once would be able to do so. it was dirty money he made, and no one seemed to care, because it was all legal. being an o'connelly had meant being a cheat, but sebastian had kept quiet, at least until one night (he's not sure where the rest of his family was, maybe upstairs, he'd never bothered to ask) where a family had actually come to their front door, begging for him to lower the price a mere three hundred below so they could afford it.
sebastian would never forget father or mother's desperate pleas, or the sad, forlorn eyes of the children that hid behind their legs as mr. o'connelly all but yelled in their faces. and himself, just fourteen years old, so used to being the good child, getting top grades and hardly raising his voice in his household, had finally succumbed to the injustice being done by his own blood. and he had yelled back, straight into the eyes that had helped create him, but wouldn't dare lend a caring hand to people that really needed it. because those people, they had done no wrong; they had lived and worked and bore children who they hoped would succeed past them, and for what? for someone human, for someone who shared the same world they lived in, to shut the door and leave them in the cold? it wasn't right. and sebastian had managed to utter the cruelest words he was capable of at the man, his father, who had let it happen.
so samuel hit sebastian.
his own son, who's naiveity of his father's wrongdoing would never once be mistaken again. it was one blow, hard and rough against his skin, and it hadn't ever happened again; maybe because sebastian never looked at him the same again, or because samuel made it of utmost importance to only be in the same room with his youngest son unless it was of absolute necessity. either way, sebastian had made it clear he wasn't his father, and would never be, not if he had to dig his own grave instead.[/ul][/ul]
